When the late Tom Moffatt was making concert promotion history by bringing Elvis here, the arena where most of his booked acts played was called the Honolulu International Center.
Even so, some are concerned about the proposal to rename the Neal S. Blaisdell arena after Moffatt. After all, Blaisdell was the mayor. As the current mayor says, there will be a lot of new areas in the planned revamping of the whole center that could be named.
Still, the overall campus will remain the NBC. And having Moffatt enshrined next to the statue of Elvis offers a nice bit of symmetry.
If rents are raised, repairs should follow
No tenant is expected to cheer a rent hike. But those living in 10 low-income properties across Oahu have their Honolulu Hale landlord to thank for holding off on an increase for years. And according to federal guidelines, increases of 3, 5 or 10 percent slated for Feb. 1 could be much steeper.
The city says it’s operating affordable housing properties at a loss, and the modest boosts will help offset some of this cost. For the sake of housing longevity, some of the incoming funds must be earmarked for immediate attention to wear-and-tear apartment repairs, which can be tended to by site managers or tenants.
