Kahuku’s Jessiya Villa(4) drives to the hoop between McKinley’s Kyle Moraga(30) and Jeremy Coloyan(12) in the second quarter of the Kahuku vs McKinley boys basketball game at McKinley gym, Tuesday, January 17, 2017.

Jessiya Villa scored 17 points and Dan Fotu powered his way to 16 points and 10 rebounds as No. 1 Kahuku overwhelmed McKinley 63-36 on Tuesday night in a battle of OIA East unbeatens.
Kahuku improved to 8-0 in league play, dropping the Tigers to 7-1 before a crowd of about 500 at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium.
Samuta Avea, a 6-foot-6 senior, was everywhere. He defended just about every position and finished with six assists, most coming in Kahuku’s lethal transition attack.
Kesi Ah-Hoy and Codie Sauvao were stellar on both ends, keeping a lid on McKinley’s normally potent scorers in the backcourt. Ah-Hoy had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sauvao added six points.
“Everyone was having a good time, even the bench,” said Fotu, a 6-7 junior who set the tone in the paint with two first-quarter blocks. “Jessiya was just driving and pitching.”
Kevin Kim led McKinley with 19 points. Point guard Kyle Moraga added six points, and Mark Burke was tough in the paint with three blocks, giving Fotu some rare competition in the paint.

With Ah-Hoy or Sauvao shadowing him, Kim, a transfer from Chicago, had just two field-goal attempts in the first quarter. He got hot in the second, hitting a 3 to spark an 11-3 run. After his second trey of the quarter, McKinley was within 25-17 entering the half.
Kahuku center Stennett Alapa’s last-second putback layup was ruled too late to beat the buzzer, which got Red Raiders coach Brandyn Akana riled up. After discussing the issue with the head official for about 10 seconds, Akana drew a technical foul.
“I’ll take it. I wanted to make a point. (The calls) changed a little bit and (it got a) little out of hand,” Akana said. “I hate to talk about that, but it’s been happening more. It’s frustrating and we’ve got to fight through it.”
After the break, Kim hit one of two technical foul shots to bring McKinley within 25-18. The home crowd got revved up, but Kahuku defused the threat by going on a 7-0 run, including a thunderous follow slam by Fotu off a missed shot.
Tigers coach Duane Omori called time out with his team down 32-18, but Kahuku kept the run going and got two layups from Sauvao and a one-handed flush by Fotu on a dish from Avea to open the lead to 41-25 late in the third quarter.
The visiting team put the game out of reach with a 15-0 run to start the final quarter. It was simply too much length, energy and defense by Kahuku, which used a mix of presses and halfcourt looks to keep McKinley from getting into a consistent rhythm.
“(Ah-Hoy) was a maniac out there on defense. He’s a great team player and uses his body well,” Omori said.
McKinley’s preseason was a struggle, and the regular season turned into something almost miraculous. Now the Tigers know where they stand against the state’s best.
“We can learn from this experience. We’ll be better next time we play them,” Omori said.
