Two more retailers are closing shop at Ala Moana Center on the heels of the failed Magnolia Bakery & Cafe and its affiliated ice cream shop, Nitrogenie.
American Apparel, which is liquidating stores nationwide as part of a bankruptcy, will likely close within the next few months, a manager said. A Levi’s employee said that with Nordstrom moving, the area is “dead,” which is one of the reasons Levi’s is not renewing its lease at Ala Moana and will shut down on Jan. 28. Both are on the third level of the state’s largest shopping center.
Ala Moana executives declined to comment, deferring inquiries to the merchants.
“Retail was down all across the world in 2015 and 2016, and it’s really hard to make a buck today because the costs are so high,” said Honolulu retail analyst Stephany Sofos. “The consumer is very fickle. You have so much competition in today’s world. The third level (of Ala Moana) is difficult; people don’t like to go vertical. You see dramatic changes in foot traffic if you’re not in the main primary areas.”
Magnolia Bakery and Nitrogenie opened in Ala Moana’s redeveloped Ewa Wing in November 2015 amid much fanfare.
The bakery closed 13 months later, with officials saying opening the cafe as a full-service restaurant as well as a kiosk at the same time turned out to be more than the franchisee could handle. Nitrogenie, the shop that created ice cream to order using liquid nitrogen, closed its Ala Moana store Sunday after just over a year in business.
The Australian-based Nitrogenie franchise opened its only U.S. location under the same parent company as Magnolia Bakery.
