A heralded tight end from Sacramento will join the Rainbow Warrior football team.
Gavin Reinwald of Elk Grove High told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he has accepted a scholarship from the Rainbow Warriors. He will ink a National Letter of Intent on Feb. 1, the first day of the signing period for football recruits, and enroll in UH’s bridge session in June.
Reinwald and teammate Damario Mclean, who committed on Sunday, completed a UH-sponsored visit this past weekend.
“We love what coach (Nick Rolovich) and all the coaching staff are doing there,” Reinwald said. “I felt I connected with each and every coach on that team. I really connected with the players. They’ve definitely got a lot going for next year.”
Reinwald played tight end, wideout and safety for Elk Grove this season. He was named to MaxPrep’s All-NorCal first team as a receiver. He projects to play tight end at UH.
He is 6 feet 3, 215 pounds, and capable of running 40 yards in 4.62 seconds. He expects to weigh 235 when he reports to the Warriors.
He also received offers from Nevada, Wyoming and UC Davis.
“Out of all of them, it came down to the players, to the coaching staff, and that at-home environment I experienced while I was there,” Reinwald said of UH.
Reinwald drew widespread attention for a video in which he punctuated a long touchdown run with a front flip into the end zone.
“Honestly, that was one of the craziest plays,” Reinwald said. “I somehow spun off three dudes. I never hit a front flip in my life. It was pretty awesome.”
