Senior center Jasianna Ah Nee-Green finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds as Campbell ousted Kaiser 51-42 on Friday night in Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I playoff action at Nanakuli gym.
Campbell (8-3), the fifth seed from the West, advanced to the quarterfinal round and will meet Leilehua, which had an opening-round bye.
Guard Gina Balino added 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Lady Sabers, who built a 16-point lead in the first half and fought off a furious rally by the Cougars — Kaiser got within six points — in the final minutes.
“I’m excited. It’s been a while since we got past this round,” Campbell coach Summer Aona said.
Danielle Silva Freeman chipped in 10 points for Campbell, which shot just 2-for-13 from 3-point range and committed 18 turnovers.
Trinidee Kahunahana had 13 points and seven rebounds for Kaiser. Senior Kayla Russell had nine points and eight boards, and Skylar Kimura scored seven of her eight points during the Lady Cougars’ fourth-quarter rally. Freshman Tanya Blakeney grabbed five boards off the bench.
The key was a matchup zone that clogged the lanes and had Kaiser off balance in the first half.
“We were able to watch footage of them in a preseason game,” Aona noted. “They drive a lot, so our defense was like a pack line.”
The Sabers were in charge from the start, bolting to a 21-6 lead. They took their biggest lead of the first half, 27-11, after Balino fed Ah Nee-Green for a bank shot in the paint late in the second quarter.
“We didn’t see (the matchup zone) in the tape we had of (Campbell),” Kaiser coach Brianna Lagat-Ramos said.
Kaiser, which shot 5-for-28 from the field in the first half, trailed by 17 when Lagat-Ramos called time out midway through the third quarter. Russell scored twice in the low post and reserve Tahani Kahawai-Robertson scored on a steal to bring the Lady Cougars within 32-25.
After a long rest, Balino re-entered and sparked a 9-2 run for the Sabers, feeding Ah Nee-Green for a layup and scoring on a spin move in the lane. Silva Freeman hit a 3, Briana Momosea-Toumolupe scored on a steal and Ah Nee-Green hustled for a fast-break layup to give Campbell a 41-27 lead.
Kaiser was resilient, however, using a late run to pull within six points. Free throws by Kahunahana and a layup by Kimura (eight points) made it 45-39 with 2:58 left.
The Sabers could have put the game away then, but Balino struggled at the free-throw line. She was 2-for-8 at the stripe in the fourth, missing the front end of two 1-and-1s to keep Kaiser’s comeback hopes alive.
It was reserve guard Taylynn Saniatan who came up big, swishing two foul shots to open the lead to 47-39. Kaiser, which was 0-for-13 from 3-point range, went cold from the field and never got closer than six the rest of the way.
Kaiser finished 7-4 despite offseason turbulence and challenges that included a changing of the guard, a new head coach and a young roster fortified by underclassmen. Kaiser had no JV team this season, but Lagat-Ramos hopes to build on the team’s success during the offseason.
“This game was bigger than basketball for us,” she said. “We’ve had so many ups and downs this season. It was a rebuilding year and we accomplished a lot.”
Nanakuli 57, Roosevelt 32
Senior guard Alana Nuuanu poured in 19 points and the host Golden Hawks (9-2) used a 16-0 run in the third quarter to break open a close game and end the Rough Riders’ season.
Kalei Cates hustled for 12 points as Nanakuli, the third-place team in the OIA West regular season, advanced to the quarterfinals. Nanakuli will travel to meet East No. 2 seed Farrington today.
The Golden Hawks led 23-19 at halftime before using a stifling man-to-man defense on the Rough Riders. The lead was up to 39-19 before Taylor Tateyama’s free throw with 0.6 seconds left in the third ended the scoreless drought for Roosevelt (3-8).
Haven Gabriel and Sadie Ann Luiz led Roosevelt, the East’s sixth-place team, with eight points each. It was a homecoming of sorts for coach Chad Kapihe, a former JV coach at Nanakuli.
