Chris Kobayashi scored nine of his 16 points during a key second-quarter rally as No. 3 Punahou edged No. 2 ‘Iolani 51-49 on Saturday afternoon at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
‘Iolani’s Hugh Hogland had a chance to tie the game, but his coast-to-coast drive and 16-foot jumper off the dribble missed at the buzzer.
Punahou improved to 5-1 and knocked ‘Iolani (4-2) out of a first-place tie in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Maryknoll, which defeated Mid-Pacific on Friday, is also 5-1.
“For both of us, we’re both healthy this time,” Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said, recalling the previous matchup won by ‘Iolani 49-38 nearly two weeks ago. “It’s unfortunate for either team to lose. Both played well.”
Kobayashi, a senior guard, shot 6-for-11 from the field and junior guard Kaulana Makaula added 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
The Buffanblu looked more comfortable than ever with a slower pace. Normally a run-and-gun team, Punahou was very efficient with 50 percent shooting from the field (23-for-46). The Buffanblu overcame subpar shooting at the foul line (7-for-13) by committing only four turnovers.
“It was a pretty exciting game. They were hitting more shots, especially some tough ones in the first half,” ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said. “We played pretty good, but we missed free throws.”
‘Iolani was unbeaten in league play before falling to Maryknoll earlier in the week. Hogland, a 6-foot-9 senior, led the Raiders with 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
The Raiders were just 3-for-10 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, finishing 14-for-24 (58 percent) for the game.
The visitors were hot at the start, shooting 4-for-6 from the arc in the first quarter. With Hogland drawing double teams from Punahou’s man defense, point guard Helam Baldomero knocked down two treys while Bailey Alabanza added another. Hogland’s follow shot at the buzzer gave the Raiders a 21-10 lead entering the second quarter.
Punahou tightened up on the perimeter defensively and extended its defense fullcourt. Kobayashi, who attempted just two shots in the first stanza, hit a 3, two foul shots and midrange jumpers during a 19-6 run. His pull-up baseline shot gave Punahou its first lead, 29-27, late in the first half.
The Buffanblu led 31-29 at the half and began to extend it. Maninoa Tufono’s straightaway 3 pushed the lead to 38-33, but the Raiders closed the third quarter with a 9-0 run. Hogland scored on two traditional three-point plays in the paint and Kawika Lee swished a corner 3 as ‘Iolani took a 42-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
Then came the unexplainable litany of free-throw misses by one of the best-shooting teams in the state. ‘Iolani went to motion offense and was more deliberate, clinging to a 46-42 lead with four minutes left.
Kobayashi’s three-point play cut the lead to one point with 3:28 left. Zayne Chong, who scored all six of his points in the final quarter, drove for a bucket to tie the game at 47 with 1:55 remaining.
Kobayashi hit a 16-foot baseline jumper for a 49-47 lead with 1:31 to go in regulation. Cole Hogland hit one of two foul shots for ‘Iolani, cutting the margin to one point.
Chong sank two foul shots for a 51-48 lead with 29 seconds left. Hugh Hogland made one of two free-throw attempts with 10.1 seconds to go.
Punahou’s Hunter Hosoda had a chance to put the game out of reach, but missed two foul shots with 8.2 ticks left.
Hogland rebounded and, with his teammates covered, pushed the ball up the left sideline. His pull-up jumper from the left elbow was too strong as time expired.
“They try to slow the game down, but we have matured a lot,” Matsuda said. “We can play that game. It was a grind against Maryknoll and Mid-Pacific, too.”
Punahou hosts Kamehameha on Monday. ‘Iolani entertains Mid-Pacific on Wednesday.
