Jack Robinson claimed the World Surf League Sunset Open title on Saturday afternoon in Haleiwa.
The victory marks Robinson’s first Qualifying Series win in his career — the Australia native topped Oahu’s Finn McGill, Brazil’s Buno Lopes and Peru’s Miguela Tudela.
Robinson’s final round score of 14.35 gave him a total of 1,000 points. McGill finished as the runner-up with a score of 14.25, giving him 750 points in total. Lopes came in third with 11.65 and 560, followed by Tudela’s 5.25/525.
Lowe victorious at UW Invitational
Hawaii freshman Lily Lowe’s 1.75-meter high jump won her gold at the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.
The victory placed her atop 35 other jumpers and is her second event win in as many attempts.
Additionally, Rainbow Wahine senior Montana Martinez’s 5,000-meter time of 16:50.96 broke a school record, beating Chantelle Laan’s previous school record by 12.67, which was set in 2008, to finish 15th overall out of 46 runners.
The ‘Bows return home to host the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational as part of the UH Sunrise Series, which is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Feb. 4.
Hawaii Hilo falls on the road
The Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball team fell short in an 81-72 road loss to Dixie State at Burns Arena in St. George, Utah.
The Vulcans (6-11, 4-7) were led by Farris Parker, who played all 40 minutes and scored a team-high 17 points.
Trevor Hill paced the Trailblazers (14-5, 11-2) with 13 points, seven assists and six boards.
>> The Vulcans edged DSU in the women’s matchup, 60-57. Sydney Mercer (20) and Alexa Jacobs (14) combined to score 34 points to lift UHH (5-9, 5-6). Dixie State (2-17, 2-11) was led by Matti Ventling, who had nine points and nine rebounds.
>> In other PacWest women’s action, Chaminade team fell to 3-15 overall and 3-11 in PacWest play in a 70-59 loss to Concordia at the CU Arena in Irvine, Calif.
Kristle Henry’s all-round effort of 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals wasn’t enough as the ‘Swords shot 30.8 percent from the field.
Morgan Bryant led the Eagles (8-10, 6-6) with 12 points.
