Delylah Sanerivi had 10 points, including the first two buckets in overtime, and 15 rebounds as Moanalua ousted defending champion Hawaii Baptist 50-47 on Wednesday night in the opening round of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division II state tournament.
OIA runner-up Moanalua, which was 7-6 in league play, will meet second-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii today. Tip-off at Farrington is 5 p.m. ILH third-place finisher Hawaii Baptist (9-2 in league play) won four ILH titles in a row until this season. The loss to Moanalua is the first time since 2010 that HBA did not advance past the opening round.
A audience of about 300 at Farrington’s Kitamura Gymnasium saw Moanalua trail for most of the way. Down 22-14 late in the second quarter, Na Menehune opened the second half with a 6-0 run and tied the game at 32 and 34, but couldn’t get over the hump.
Kylie Casinas then came through for Moanalua, swishing a clutch wing 3 to tie the game at 39 with 1:20 remaining in regulation. Moanalua had a chance to take the final shot, but HBA’s Ally Wada stole a pass with three seconds left and the game went to an extra period.
That’s when Sanerivi, a strong low post, scored on a follow shot, and then on a turnaround bank shot on the block to give Moanalua a 39-35 lead. HBA got within 44-42, and then 47-45 on an NBA-distance trey by Wada with 36.9 seconds to go.
However, Moanalua got free throws by Raven Rosa-Lasco to put the game out of reach. In all, Moanalua shot just 5-for-14 in regulation, but improved to 7-for-10 in overtime.
“Experience plays a role and none of our girls one through 11 has been here,” coach Tani Almont-Done said. “But being in the OIA championship game gave us a little experience.”
Rosa-Lasco, who did not play in that OIA title loss to Kalani, led Moanalua with 15 points. Kelcie Leong added 12 points. Na Menehune had no turnovers in the extra stanza.
Wada, a 5-foot-8 junior, led all scorers with 23 points. She also had 10 boards and three assists. Kyley Nakagawa added nine caroms.
The Eagles shot 19-for-53 from the field (36 percent) against Moanalua’s man-to-man defense, including 3-for-15 from the arc. They stayed close on the boards, losing that battle just 30-27.
“Hat’s off to Moanalua,” HBA coach Keith Sugiura said. “This is kind of disappointing for our seniors. They put in a lot of work. We’re relatively young. Playing in pressure situations is definitely a learning experience moving forward.”

Kaimi Kalei sank a free throw with 15 seconds left and Olivia Vaeatangitau followed up a miss by Kalei for a four-point lead as the Saints escaped with an opening-round win over the Marauders.
Vaeatangitau, a senior center, led the Saints with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Kalei added nine points and Mission Ribeiro tallied seven points and six rebounds.
Kruzee Balcobero lead Waipahu with 13 points. Kaelyn Aceret added eight points, including a 15-footer that brought the Marauders within two points in the final minute.
