The Coast Guard and the Kauai Fire Department have stopped searching for a Maryland woman who was reported missing after she ran into trouble while swimming off Kauai late Monday afternoon.
The Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday and the Fire Department ended its search Thursday for the woman identified as Destiny Marbury, 22, of Baltimore.
Responders have scanned 545 square miles of water along Kauai’s north shore since Monday night with no sign of the woman.
She apparently became distressed while swimming about 300 yards from shore off of Anini Beach. Her friend, a Kapaa man, jumped into the water but got caught in a rip current and could not reach her.
The Coast Guard deployed its MH-65 Dolphin helicopter.
