For the first time in a long time, Chico Furtado said he went beyond his comfort zone.
That meant the No. 2-seeded Maryknoll Spartans unleashed a vicious fullcourt press for more than an entire half of a state tourney game — with the lead — to oust third-seeded Lahainaluna 62-49 on Friday night in the Division I semifinals of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships at Blaisdell Arena.
Kamalu Kamakawiwo‘ole relished the constant action, using her 6-foot height and large wingspan at the top of Maryknoll’s press. It was a nightmare for the Lady Lunas, a team that usually does the pressing. Instead, Kamakawiwo‘ole scored 20 points — 16 in the first half — and added six rebounds, two blocks and three steals in just 21 minutes. The only bummer for her was foul trouble, and the junior played just 21 minutes.
“Kamalu’s length, she did an excellent job getting tips, and all our players were quick to the ball. It was a crazy game with lots of fouls,” Furtado said. “But we had the deeper team. Todd (Rickard) has some very good teams, but they don’t have the depth like we have, so once they got into foul trouble, that helped us.”
ILH champion Maryknoll (27-3 overall) got solid overall play from just about everyone. Point guard Rhianne Omori tallied 18 points and four dimes, and defensively, their halfcourt man defense coupled with the press forced the MIL champions into 24 turnovers.
“At practice, we press at the beginning. We’re doing good with it and sometimes it brings our energy,” Kamakawiwo‘ole said.
Furtado has always preferred more basic halfcourt man-to-man defense. His gut said otherwise this time. With center Isabella Cravens in early foul trouble, the press was just about perfect for a long, quick team like Maryknoll.
“Our offense, we hit a couple of 3s, but we were still stagnant. I said, ‘Let’s get some energy.’ ”
Even with the lead in the fourth quarter, the Lady Spartans kept the the fullcourt pressure coming, a rarity for a Furtado-coached team. It worked like a charm for the deeper Spartans.
Elisapeta Hafoka led the Lunas (20-3) with 12 points and five boards. Keiko Aotaki added 11. They missed Braenna Estabillo, who had 11 points on three treys before colliding with Maryknoll’s Moe Nota on a second-quarter play with Maryknoll ahead 29-10. Nota’s tooth gashed Estabillo’s forehead, causing bleeding. Neither player returned to the game.
Maryknoll will meet two-time defending state champion Konawaena in the final, a rematch of last year’s title game.
Friday’s semifinal game was tight early and Lahainaluna led 17-16 after Estabillo hit a tough runner. Maryknoll then scored on a wing 3 and a jumper by Kamakawiwo‘ole, and with Maryknoll ahead 21-20, the furious fullcourt press sparked an 8-0 run and Lahainaluna never regained the lead.
Furtado said the Spartans used their fullcourt press last year while trailing against Konawaena in the title game. But while ahead? He had to think way back about that one.
“Our early teams at Kalaheo,” he recalled. “We pressed a lot then. Sharon Wahinekapu, Brandy (Richardson), Taylor Smith.
The Spartans had 18 turnovers, but outrebounded the Lunas 38-21. Maryknoll also shot 83 percent from the free-throw line (19-for-23).
“We’re happy we won this game,” Kamakawiwo‘ole said. “We want to come out tomorrow and do better.”
Konawaena 51, Kamehameha 31
Cherilyn Molina scored 16 points, Mikayla Tablit added 14 and Celena Jane Molina tallied 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the two-time defending champion Wildcats.
The hottest team of the first two rounds, Kamehameha was shackled by the Wildcats. Konawaena’s man defense took the Warriors out of their offense and limited Mikiala Maio — who scored 30 points in a quarterfinal win over Farrington on Thursday — to just five first-half points as Konawaena zoomed to a commanding 28-9 lead by halftime.
Maio, playing on a sore ankle, finished with 13 points and Kalina Obrey added 11. No other Warrior scored more than three points. It was, as one former coach watching the game noted, like “a clinic.”
“We had to make sure we didn’t get in foul trouble. Just playing smart,” said guard Cherilyn Molina, who covered Kamehameha sharpshooter Kiana Vierra. “We practiced before on the cutters.”
Tablit was opportunistic against Kamehameha’s man defense, scoring 12 points in the first half.
“Mikayla’s stepping up, being a leader on the team with me,” Cherilyn Molina said.
Kamehameha shot just 32 percent from the field (11-for-34), was outrebounded 26-18 and committed 12 turnovers. Konawaena shot 54 percent from the field (21-for-39) and had just five turnovers.
Coach Bobbie Awa’s team will go after the program’s eighth state championship in the final today against Maryknoll.
