Moanalua guard CJ Bonilla’s lone field goal Friday night gave Na Menehune a heart-stopping win and a spot in the state tournament.
Bonilla’s driving layup at the buzzer punctuated Moanalua’s dramatic 65-63 win over Kalaheo in a quarterfinal game of the OIA Division I boys basketball playoffs at the Mustangs’ gym.
“We teach them to attack and try to make plays and CJ just did a phenomenal heads-up job,” Moanalua coach Byron Mello said amid the celebration. “We wouldn’t have done that earlier in the season. We’ve just come such a long way. I’m just so proud of my kids.”
After Kalaheo’s Nate Gribbins drained two free throws to tie the game, Moanalua inbounded the ball with with 7.7 seconds left and no timeouts. Na Menehune worked the ball across midcourt and Bonilla found himself with possession on the left wing. The sophomore went hard to the basket, and his shot rolled off his fingers and dropped through the net as the buzzer sounded.
“I was just so overjoyed because this team has worked so hard to get to where we are right now,” Bonilla said. “I’m just overwhelmed with joy right now.”
Moanalua advances to the OIA semifinals set for Tuesday at McKinley and secured one of the league’s six berths into the Division I state tournament.
Na Menehune survived the tournament’s opening round with a 66-61 win at Mililani and advanced again on Friday led by a lights-out shooting performance by junior Caleb Casinas, who drained seven 3-pointers in a 28-point performance, and the gritty interior play of forward RJ Dominguez, who added 21.
“It’s crazy. At the same time it feels really good,” Casinas said of his run. “You take that shot and you watch it fall into the basket and see the net just splash.”
Moanalua finished sixth in the OIA East in a regular season that included a 55-49 loss to Kalaheo in overtime on Jan. 14.
“Unbelievable,” Mello said. “Two ACL injuries, three guys out, we’re down to 10. They don’t complain, they suck it up, they play together and grew up.”
Kalaheo, the OIA East second seed and defending league champion, falls into the fifth-place bracket and will need a win on Tuesday to extend its season into the state tournament.
Senior guard Captain Whitlock played all 32 minutes and led the Mustangs with 24 points with four 3-pointers. Senior Noah Woodby scored seven of his 15 points in a fourth quarter that saw five ties and seven lead changes.
“We prepared for them, we kind of thought we would play Moanalua again and we had our full strength. But down the stretch they hit some tough shots,” Kalaheo coach Rob Pardini said.
Kalaheo led 21-15 after the first quarter and opened the second with a 9-0 run for a 30-15 lead at the 4:11 mark of the period. Moanalua answered with a 13-0 explosion in a span of 1:50, with Casinas dropping three from long range in the run.
Kalaheo led 32-28 at halftime and the teams traded momentum swings throughout the second half before Bonilla ended the night with his only basket.
“He’s a really strong attacker,” Casinas said. “With the game on the line and CJ taking it to the basket, I had a lot of trust and when the ball went in it was unreal.”
