The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team used a 12-0 scoring run to defeat No. 6 Hawaii Pacific 92-82 in Azusa, Calif., on Monday.
HPU’s Chauncey Orr and Connor Looney contributed 25 points. Jordan Martin added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Sharks (21-2, 13-2 PacWest). Petar Kutlesic scored a game-high 31 points for the Cougars (12-13, 7-8 PacWest), followed by Connor Peterson’s 27-point performance.

Shad Watson posted a team-high 20 points for the Seasiders (5-16, 3-12 PacWest), who dropped their fourth consecutive conference game.
HPU men’s basketball tied atop West
The Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team is tied atop the Division II West Region Media Poll announced Monday. The weekly poll is conducted by the Division II Sports Information Directors Association.
The Sharks are tied with California Baptist with 56 points each. HPU recently defeated the Lancers 81-67 on Thursday.
HPU’s Orr collects third weekly honor
Hawaii Pacific senior Chauncey Orr was recognized as the PacWest Men’s Basketball Defender of the Week announced Monday. The 6-4 Kentucky native averaged 16 points and seven rebounds in the Sharks’ two road wins this weekend over Cal Baptist and Concordia (Calif.).
Orr is third in the PacWest in steals (1.82 steals/game), fourth in field goal percentage (.546) and fifth in scoring (16.5 points/game).
Chaminade, Hilo receive weekly honors
Chaminade pitcher Luana Moreno was named PacWest Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Moreno tossed 10 innings, allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts and no walks against Western Washington on Sunday.
Hawaii Hilo’s Bailey Gaspar was named Player of the Week and Brinell Kaleikini was recognized as Freshman of the Week. Kaleikini hit .429 in the 2017 Desert Stinger Tournament, while Gaspar hit .471 with five extra-base hits, eight RBIs and eight runs and was named to the all-tournament team.
HPU’s Flint earns weekly freshman award
Hawaii Pacific pitcher Blake Flint was named PacWest Conference Baseball Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday. Flint threw eight shutout innings, allowed three hits and recorded six strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Augustana (S.D.) on Saturday.
HPU will resume play on Feb. 17 with a five-game series against the University of Sciences of Philadelphia.
Sharks edge Azusa Pacific on the road
Seniors Brianne Yasukochi and CeCe Pearl recorded 15 points each to lift the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team in a 76-48 conference win over Azusa Pacific on Monday at the Felix Event Center.
HPU (15-4, 12-2 PacWest) used an 18-2 run in the second quarter to snap the Cougars’ five-game win streak. Abigail Goodsell scored a team-high 17 points for Azusa Pacific (12-11, 10-5 PacWest).
The Sharks will return to the islands to face BYU-Hawaii on Thursday at 5 p.m.
