No. 2 ‘Iolani stayed calm down the stretch to keep its first-round ILH title hopes alive.
Justin Genovia and Cole Hogland scored fast-break baskets in the final 1:04 and ‘Iolani rallied from five down with 3:12 remaining to edge No. 4 Maryknoll 43-42 in an ILH playoff tiebreaker on Monday at Maryknoll.
The defending state champion Raiders (9-2), who forced a three-way tie for first place in the ILH regular season with a two-point win over Maryknoll on Saturday, will play Punahou at 6:30 tonight at Hemmeter Fieldhouse with the first-round title and a state tournament berth on the line.
“I don’t think they’ll want to let these last two games go to waste, so I’m sure they’ll come out hard (against Punahou),” ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said.
While the Buffanblu haven’t played since closing the regular season with a 55-48 win over Mid-Pacific on Jan. 31, the Raiders will play for the fourth time in seven days since.
Hugh Hogland had 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks and Genovia, a junior guard, added six of his 12 points in a fourth quarter won 20-12 by the Raiders.
Genovia hit four consecutive free throws to turn a 36-31 deficit into a one-point game with 2:48 remaining.
Trailing by one after Maryknoll took a timeout with 1:19 remaining, Genovia picked the pocket of Jordyn Perez and went coast-to-coast for the go-ahead layup with 1:04 remaining.
An intentional foul was called after the basket was good, but Hugh Hogland missed two free throws.
Cole Hogland made two free throws for a three-point lead before Perez cut it to one with two from the line with 29.3 seconds left.
‘Iolani inbounded the ball and threw a pass long to Cole Hogland, who corralled it and went coast-to-coast for a layup while being fouled to put ‘Iolani ahead by three.
“I was thinking I’ll look around and if the guy is on me, I’ll stop, but nobody was there and I saw a clear path to the bucket,” Cole Hogland said.
Hogland missed the free throw to keep it a one-possession game and Maryknoll called timeout with 20.7 seconds left.
The Spartans moved the ball around the 3-point line, but ‘Iolani closed out well on the shooters.
Eventually, senior forward Kainoa Ferreira got the ball on the wing and drove to the basket for an uncontested layup with five seconds remaining.
‘Iolani didn’t have to inbound the ball as the clock ran out with Maryknoll, which was out of timeouts, behind by one.
All three meetings this season have been decided by a combined five points.
“It’s all about executing and we made a couple of mistakes down the stretch,” Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said.
Jaylen Cain had 12 points and Kaulana Schmidt added eight to lead the Spartans (8-3), who turned the ball over five times on their first six possessions.
‘Iolani scored the game’s first six points before Maryknoll went on a 23-7 run to take a 10-point lead at the half.
The Spartans led 30-23 heading into the final quarter before ‘Iolani took its first lead of the second half on Genovia’s steal and layup.
“We don’t win this game two weeks ago. Our guys over the course of the season have grown up so much and it takes maturity to get through a game like this,” Shimamoto said. “You saw some tough situations come up and we had to stay positive and battle through them and if we didn’t, we probably would have just wilted because (Maryknoll) hit some big shots.”
Maryknoll made six 3-pointers in the game and was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. ‘Iolani shot 16-for-24.
Now it’s a quick turnaround to face a rested Punahou squad.
“Our bench stepped up in the first half and gave us some rest, so I think we have a lot (left),” Cole Hogland said. “I feel pretty good right now and I’m sure the people on the team feel good right now.”
