A 29-year-old man has been charged after allegedly firing gunshots at a group of people at a shopping center parking lot in Hilo. Desmond Lee K. Kepano was charged Wednesday with attempted second-degree murder, four counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, resisting arrest and resisting an order to stop. His bail was set at $294,000.
Police said that on Monday at about 10 p.m., Kepano fired several shots at a group of people — four men ages 18 and 19, and a 20-year-old woman — who were standing near their vehicles in a parking lot at Puainako Center.
No injuries were reported, but bullets struck the vehicles multiple times.
Police responded, and a police chase ensued after officers saw the suspect in a white Jeep in Keaau. At some point the vehicle stopped, and a woman and teenager exited the vehicle before it sped away. Police said Kepano ditched the Jeep near an old mill in Keaau and ran before police detained him. He has a criminal record of terroristic threatening, a firearm-related charge and criminal contempt of court.
