There were a lot of individual accomplishments at the Oahu Interscholastic Association wrestling championships Saturday night at Leilehua High, but none bigger than Angela Peralta’s.
The Radford wrestler won her fourth league championship by beating Waianae’s Kaleinani Makuaole by pin in the 147-pound class.
“It was a big accomplishment and it wasn’t easy,” Peralta said. “I was tired and want to thank my coaches for helping me work to attain it. States (next week) is what really matters.”
Moanalua’s Logan Garcia, who is No. 7 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings, pulled off the upset of the night at 122 pounds. He captured his second OIA title by pinning a hurting Jayson Pagurayan of Kapolei, who is No. 4 in the p4p and was going for his fourth OIA championship.
“I just went out there and had fun. That’s it,” Garcia said. “He (Pagurayan) was tough because he went out there and wrestled with his injured ankle.”
Waianae’s boys and Pearl City’s girls wrapped up the team championships. The Seariders boys scored 162 points, followed by Campbell (155) and Kapolei (139). The Chargers girls netted 190 points, followed by Moanalua (171) and Roosevelt (135).
Two wrestlers captured their third league title — Campbell’s Triston Santos and Pearl City’s Mikayla Abe.
Santos topped Leilehua’s Kaena DeSantos 10-2 at 128 pounds, and Abe just got past Kaiser’s Hanna Kannys 3-2.
“I wanted this one because we had faced each other twice before and they both went to triple overtime and we both won one,” Abe said. “While I was fighting, I was thinking not only about myself but my teammates in the stands.”
Said Santos: “I felt good out there. Wanted to go out there wrestle tough and wrestle my match.”
It was a big night for Kahuku’s Teniya Alo as well. The two-time Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ at ‘Iolani won her first OIA crown with an 11-5 victory over Kaiser’s Roselani Ikei in the 134-pound class.
In another match pitting p4p wrestlers, Roosevelt’s Macy Higa (No. 6) beat Kaiser’s Tiare Ikei (No. 10) 6-2 in the 114-pound division. Both were going for their second OIA title.
Winning their second league championships were: Campbell’s Zayren Terukina (134) and Micah Tynanes-Perez (222), Pearl City’s Makoa Cooper (154) and Jennie Fuamatu (186), and Leilehua’s Kelani Corbett (157) and Brianna Leong (104).
Farrington’s Lavenia Fotu denied Waianae’s Mildred Keopuhiwa a second league crown with a pin at 227 pounds.
