It was a another day at the volleyball office for No. 4 Hawaii, with the Rainbow Warriors continuing to be all business on their second road trip of the season. A very efficient offense, led by sophomore opposite Stijn van Tilburg’s .667 hitting percentage, gave Hawaii its eighth straight victory and third consecutive road sweep.
Van Tilburg put down 17 kills with just one error and the Warriors took just 81 minutes to defeat McKendree 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 in a nonconference match at the Statham Center in Lebanon, Ill. In the Hawaiian-themed night, it was all Hawaii (13-2), with the Warriors matching their best start since 1998.
Hawaii continually thwarted the Bearcats (5-11) with defense, winning the blocking battle 10.5-6 and the dig war 34-19. The tone was established early, with 14 digs and six blocks in Set 1. Freshman middle Patrick Gasman was in on five of the early stuffs.
“Our defense was really good again,” Warriors coach Charlie Wade said. “We frustrated them early with blocks and digs, digging balls that they were used to seeing go down.
“I thought McKendree has some nice pieces and we know they’re better than they played tonight. They’ve been competitive against some really good teams. We just executed well.”
Senior middle Wyatt Patterson had eight kills for the Bearcats, who have lost five straight.
The Warriors shut down McKendree’s top weapon, senior opposite Maalik Walker, who came in averaging over 3.5 kills per set. He had three kills with three errors, hitting .000, in the first two sets before coach Nickie Sanlin pulled most of her starters after Set 2.
Wade, who used 11 players Tuesday, said he would “certainly like to” give his reserves more playing time in today’s match against Lindenwood (0-10), the last of the Warriors’ four-matches-in-six-days trek. It will be Hawaii’s second Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opponent in a row as UH travels to St. Charles, Mo., for what is just the second home match of the season for the Lions.
Van Tilburg continued his impressive second-year campaign on Tuesday with his 11th double-digit-kill performance, his eighth in the past nine matches. His third kill of the short night broke an 11-all tie to put the Warriors up for good and at 18-14 he had a kill and ace in a 3-0 run that helped Hawaii pull away.
Set 2 was more of the same, and more of van Tilburg. He had seven kills on nine attempts, with his lone hitting error allowing McKendree to pull to 16-12.
An ace by reserve sophomore setter Joe Worsley gave Hawaii set point at 24-16, but three errors by the Warriors prevented them from closing it out sooner. Patterson’s attack error gave Hawaii the 2-0 lead.
As happened in the previous sets, Set 3 was close early. At 9-6, three kills from van Tilburg highlighted a 7-1 run and the Warriors were never threatened the rest of the way.
Freshman opposite Rado Parapunov replaced van Tilburg at 19-12 and the Bulgarian national played a part in Hawaii’s final four points with three kills and a block.
Senior hitter Kupono Fey had two of the team’s four aces to go with five kills. Sophomore hitter Brett Rosenmeier added five kills and eight digs, and junior libero Tui Tuileta also had eight digs.
