A state jury found Adrian-John Bringas guilty today of murder in last April’s stabbing death of 16-year-old Farrington High School football player Wesley Ulugalu-Sula.
Witnesses testified that Bringas, 28, let Ulugalu-Sula sample some marijuana then attacked the teenager when Ulugalu-Sula said he didn’t have any money.
Bringas said he stabbed Ulugalu-Sula in self-defense after he was attacked and mobbed by an unknown number of teenagers at the Towers at Kuhio Park public housing complex in Kalihi.
The jurors deliberated one full day before reaching their verdict. They also found Bringas not guilty of assault in connection with the stabbing of Ulugalu-Sula’s older brother Chippa. Chippa testified he was stabbed in the leg when he tried to stop Bringas from getting away after Bringas had stabbed Wesley.
Bringas faces a mandatory life prison term with the opportunity for release on parole at sentencing in May. The Hawaii Paroling Authority will later decide how long Bringas will have to remain behind bars before he is eligible for parole.
