It’s back into the pool for other 2 trustee finalists

While the ongoing effort to to fill a vacancy on Kamehameha Schools’ board of trustees may be in line with Probate Court rules, the process is moving at a snail’s pace. A full year after screening efforts were launched, a second call for candidates is now underway because one of three finalists dropped out. The reboot is a head-scratcher.

Clearly, candidates must be carefully vetted as the trustees oversee an education-focused trust that’s among the largest of its kind in the United States. It was valued at $11.1 billion in the 2015 fiscal year. Even so, the initial call netted 70 applicants. Not enough?

Affordable housing professor will have lots to study

Decades in the making, our affordable housing crisis remains a perplexing riddle. Where to turn? With a $790,000 gift to create a “distinguished professorship in affordable housing” at the University of Hawaii, the nonprofit Hawaii Community Reinvestment Corp. is looking to academia for answers.

Here’s hoping that the academic tasked with puzzling it out acts quickly. Right now, Oahu needs 24,000 affordable units to meet pent-up demand, but the marketplace is adding only 2,000 to 3,000 units to the supply annually, with most priced as luxury housing.
