Major Maui landowner Alexander &Baldwin Inc. plans to build a shopping center anchored by a new Safeway store in Kahului.
A&B announced the plan Thursday and said the project, called Ho‘okele Shopping Center, should break ground early next year and be finished by June 2019.
Safeway intends to operate a 57,400-square-foot store and a gas station at the 94,000-square-foot center, A&B said.
The site, which is at Maui Business Park at the corner of Hana Highway and Hookele Street near
Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Costco and Lowe’s, is several blocks from an existing Safeway store.
A representative at California-based Safeway was unable to immediately say Thursday whether the company’s existing store in Kahului would remain or be closed.
