A man who was a suspect in a felony investigation was talking to police Friday when he plunged to his death from the rocks near the Makapuu Lookout.
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the 50-year-old man as Kevin T. Oshiro of Kaneohe. It listed his cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries but said the manner of death was still under investigation.
The Honolulu Police Department said in a statement that officers were speaking with the suspect “when he either jumped or fell from the rocks.”
In a Friday television news report, KITV cited unnamed sources in identifying Oshiro as a retired police officer.
HPD would not confirm the suspect’s identity Monday, but said officers had been searching for him Friday morning as part of a felony investigation and located him at Makapuu. Police would not release additional details of the investigation.
Following Oshiro’s death, police opened an unattended-death investigation.
HPD’s 2014 annual report listed Oshiro as among the department’s retirees that year. Oshiro at the time was a metro police sergeant who had been with the department 23 years, according to the annual report.
The Honolulu Fire Department on Friday said department personnel responded to a call at 10:43 that morning of a swimmer in distress off Makapuu. Police at the scene reported that a man had jumped from the lookout, according to HFD.
Rescue personnel in a boat reached the man, who was unconscious, not breathing and had traumatic injuries consistent with a fall of more than 200 feet, HFD said. The man was taken by helicopter to a nearby landing zone and pronounced dead at noon.
