Seattle University junior Jacques Herbert picked a great time to set a personal record in the one-mile run.
The 2014 Punahou alumnus ran the race in 4 minutes, 15.05 seconds to win medalist honors at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday.
Herbert also finished in sixth place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:40.50, which came after he won the mile by .78 seconds.
“His strength and speed endurance have improved since last outdoor season,” Seattle U. coach Trisha Steidl said in a press release. “That, coupled with his dead-on focus and desire to get this title put him in position to mentally and physically be prepared to do what he did. He looked in control the whole time and made confident moves.”
The outdoor track and field season begins March 18.
Hayashida ties Seattle Pacific record
Seattle Pacific senior Kristi Hayashida tied the school record with a 9.925 on the balance beam to win the event in a four-team meet at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif., on Friday.
Hayashida, who is from Mililani and was home schooled, topped her previous best score of 9.90 to tie the record established 16 years ago by Alison Siegel.
Her score helped lead the Falcons to a season-high point total in the meet.
“Alison was also an awesome beam worker. She and Kristi are both deserving of being school record holders,” said SPU coach Laurel Tindall in a press release. “A 9.95 would beat it and I would say Kristi is definitely capable of that. She pretty much stuck her dismount, but there was a little room for error there.”
Hayashida placed second nationally on the beam in last year’s USA Gymnastics Collegiate meet after finishing third as a sophomore and 10th during her freshman season.
