Outrigger Enterprises Group, which was recently purchased by Denver-based KSL Resorts, is moving forward on its $100 million plan to transform the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort.
Honolulu City Council Chairman Ron Menor introduced a resolution Tuesday to grant the project a special management area use permit and a shoreline setback variance. The city Department of Planning and Permitting recommended conditional approval on Feb. 23, but the regulatory process still requires council vetting.
Last summer, Outrigger unveiled a plan that created more meeting and green space and added 60 rooms to the Pacific Tower. The 150-foot-high, 17-story extension is within shoreline setbacks, but a variance would make room for planters, a recreation deck, an existing stairway and landing, and drainage system. Plans also include demolition of a dated pool deck and the Diamond Head Tower. The existing Shore Bird Restaurant & Beach Bar and Ocean House Waikiki would close.
‘Ohana begins Honolulu-Kapalua service
‘Ohana by Hawaiian began service between Honolulu and Kapalua Airport on Wednesday as the turboprop operator of Hawaiian Airlines began twice-daily round-trip service to West Maui.
The flights mark 30 years to the day that Kapalua Airport opened and Hawaiian launched its inaugural service, which operated until 1993. ‘Ohana flies 48-seat, ATR-42 aircraft.

Bank of Hawaii has promoted strategy, information and finance manager Matthew Emerson to executive vice president of its retail deposits departmentfrom senior vice president. He joined the bank in 2010 as vice president and internet banking manager of its online and mobile banking department, and numerous leadership positions in private banking, investment services group, products and non-branch channels and ATM, internet and mobile departments. His experience includes vice president of strategic planning at Wells Fargo Bank.
Hawaii Pacific Health has named Dr. Andy Lee medical director of Hawaii Health Partners. He was previously assistant director for U.S. Acute Care Solutions and recently elected chief of staff at Pali Momi Medical Center.
