Motorboat owner allowed more time to clear beach
The owner of a 35-foot cabin motorboat has been given extra time to remove it from Kihei Beach, where it ran aground Wednesday afternoon.
The Hanamana broke loose of its offshore mooring near South Kihei and Uwapo roads and was stranded on the shore in front of the Kihei Canoe Club.
Owner William Domen Jr. informed the Coast Guard and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation of the incident. Under DLNR guidelines, Domen had 72 hours to remove the vessel, which is uninsured. Domen has asked for additional time to secure help in the task, according to a DLNR news release.
Officials with the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation inspected the boat, which appeared intact, and determined that it was not at risk of further damage.
The DLNR said the boat could have been moved as soon as Friday evening, during high tide, via an ocean channel. The agency did not specify how much more time Domen will be given.
