Excessive speed appeared to be a factor in a single-moped crash that left a 30-year-old man in critical condition Saturday morning in Kaneohe, police said.
The man, who was not wearing a helmet, was speeding southbound on Kahekili Highway near Hui Iwa Street when he lost control and was ejected from the moped at about 2:30 a.m., police said. A passerby found the driver and called police. The man was taken to the hospital.
Fire damages restaurant in Ko Olina
Fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to a Ko Olina eatery on Saturday morning.
Honolulu Fire Department personnel called to the Ko Olina Marketplace on Olani Street at 9:42 a.m. found smoke coming from a two-story commercial building, according to HFD spokesman Capt. Michael Jones.
Ten fire companies staffed by 32 personnel responded to the two-alarm fire, which was contained to a two-story exhaust duct located in Monkeypod Kitchen.
The fire was quickly brought under control and second-alarm units were released at 10:14 a.m., Jones said.
Damage was limited to the structure, with no reported harm to its contents. Building security personnel evacuated all occupants before firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Man injured in hang-gliding crash
A man who was hang gliding suffered multiple injuries after crashing at high speed on the Mokuleia side of Kaena Point on Saturday afternoon.
Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel responding to the 1:20 p.m. emergency call found the man about 25 feet below the point of impact. They flew the injured man, believed to be in his 30s, via helicopter to Dillingham Airfield, where he was transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services personnel, according to HFD spokesman Capt. Michael Jones.
Kauai house fire causes extensive damage
A house fire Friday night in Anahola, Kauai, displaced three residents and caused an estimated $300,000 in damage.
Fire crews were dispatched at 8:11 p.m. Friday to a fire at a three-bedroom house on Hakuaina Road, Kauai County said by email.
The fire was fully extinguished just before 10 p.m.
No one was home at the time and no one was injured.
The fire broke out in the living room and spread to the kitchen, hallway and garage. The cause remains under investigation.
