The No. 5 Hawaii beach volleyball team concluded its season-opening road trip with a sweep of Jacksonville and a win over No. 12 Grand Canyon.
The Rainbow Wahine (4-0) took all five courts in straight sets against the Dolphins (0-3) to finish off the Arizona Invitational. The ’Bows dominated the tournament, winning 14 of 15 flights. UH then headed to Phoenix for an evening match at Grand Canyon, where they handed the Antelopes (4-1) their first loss of the year.
The ’Bows return to action for their home opener on Friday, hosting Loyola Marymount and Stetson at the Queen’s Cup in Waikiki.
Point Loma sweeps baseball doubleheader
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team dropped both games in a doubleheader with Point Loma, falling 18-1 and 6-2 in San Diego on Saturday.
The Sea Lions (8-3, 2-0 PacWest) blew the first game open in the third inning, plating eight runs as they sent 12 men to bat in the inning. In the game, Wyatt Champlin was 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored, and also hit a solo home run. On the mound, Kellen Sheppard threw eight strong innings, striking out 10.
In the second game, the Sharks (11-5, 1-3) fell behind early as Point Loma jumped out to a 4-0 lead before HPU finally got on the board in the sixth inning.
The two teams will play another doubleheader today, starting at 9 a.m.
Academy stifles BYUH softball
The Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team mustered just one run in a doubleheader against Academy of Art on Saturday in Brisbane, Calif.
BYUH (6-14, 5-5 PacWest) scored first in Game One, but the Urban Knights came right back to take the lead in the second inning, 2-1. From there, Academy of Art steadily added to its lead before blowing the game open in the sixth inning with four runs.
In the second game, Academy of Art jumped ahead early to a 4-0 lead. With the Seasiders managing just three hits for the day, the game was called after five innings.
BYUH will now head home to take on Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday in a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
Chaminade swept by Azusa Pacific
The Chaminade softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with Azusa Pacific, falling 11-10 and 10-0 at Central Oahu Regional Park.
The first game started quickly, as the Cougars (12-5, 4-0 PacWest) scored three runs in the first inning, but the Silverswords (2-10, 0-4) came right back with five in the bottom of the inning, most coming off Kiana Ulufale’s grand slam. After Azusa Pacific took the lead again 10-9 in the sixth, Chaminade tied it up in the bottom of the inning. But in the seventh, the Cougars picked up the go-ahead run to seventh before shutting down the Silverswords for the win.
In the seventh, Azusa Pacific plated 10 runs in the first three innings, picking up 17 total hits in the game to breeze to an easy victory that was called in the fifth inning.
The Silverswords will next take on Concordia on Tuesday.
