Hawaii junior Sarah Toeaina enjoyed double honors on Monday with her selection to the All-Big West first team and the conference player of the week award.
Toeaina enters the Big West tournament averaging 13.9 points per game overall and 15.9 in Big West play while shooting 47.2 percent from the field.
“I was really surprised,” Toeaina said of the first-team selection. “It was a blessing and humbling experience, but I couldn’t have done it without my team and coaches and everyone who supported me.”
After averaging 6.7 points last season, Toeaina scored in double figures in 14 of 16 conference games, hitting for at least 20 points five times. She closed the regular season with a career-high 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting in UH’s 66-63 win over Long Beach State on Saturday. Her player of the week honor is the first for UH since Feb. 2, 2015, a span of 38 weeks.
Guard Julissa Tago was named to the Big West All-Freshman team. Tago averaged 5.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game and had 25 assists in conference play while contributing at various positions from point guard to small forward.
“You have two young ladies who have put the work in and they’re seeing the rewards for that work and I could not be more proud of them,” UH coach Laura Beeman said.
