University of Hawaii sophomore Johan Sandell qualified for the NCAA championships with a third-place finish in the men’s 3-meter diving event at the NCAA Zone E qualifying meet on Tuesday in Flagstaff, Ariz.
With the top five divers qualifying for the NCAA meet, Sandell posted a total score of 719.45 to earn a berth. Sandell also will complete in the 1-meter event at the NCAA championships after placing 12th in the event on Monday.
UH junior Monica Gavaris placed 43rd in the women’s 1-meter.
Sandell, Madison Sthamann and Mariah Renteria will compete in the platform event today.
Seasiders take 2 from Baldwin Wallace
The BYU-Hawaii softball team swept a doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday at BYUH softball field, 4-0 and 6-2.
The Seasiders (8-14, 5-5 PacWest) jumped ahead early, as Alanna Anderson smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the first. BYUH added a run in the second, then another in the sixth.
In the second game, the Seasiders again grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first, before adding another four in the third. The Yellow Jackets (2-4) finally got on the board in the fifth, plating a pair of runs.
BYUH will next face Azusa Pacific on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Azusa Pacific sweeps HPU
The Hawaii Pacific softball team dropped both games in a doubleheader with Azusa Pacific, falling 7-1 and 5-4 on Tuesday at Howard Okita Field in Kaneohe.
In the opener, the Cougars (15-6, 7-1 PacWest) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth inning and scored six runs in the final four innings to earn a comfortable win.
In the second game, the Sharks (8-6, 3-3) carved out a 4-1 lead, but lost it in the seventh inning when Azusa scored four times to steal a victory.
HPU will return to action on Thursday, facing Concordia (Calif.) at 1 p.m.
