A 21-month-old boy was taken in critical condition to a trauma hospital Friday after he fell from the third floor of a high-rise in Salt Lake.

The fall occurred at about 6:45 a.m. at the 29-floor Five Regents Condominium at 2888 Ala Ilima St. The baby was conscious and crying when paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital.

2 are under investigation in assault of baby

Honolulu police are investigating a second-degree assault case involving a 2-month-old boy who suffered multiple skull fractures.

The alleged assault occurred Feb. 27 in Aiea. Police are investigating two people, a 28-year-old woman and 47-year-old man. The infant’s condition is unknown at this time.

Police declined to say exactly where the assault occurred due to the pending investigation. No arrests have been made.

Another fire occurs at Wal-Mart in Mililani

Honolulu firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire Friday at the Mililani Wal-Mart, the second fire believed to be intentionally set at the store this year.

A small fire occurred just after 6:30 a.m. in the pillow section of the store at 95-550 Lanikuhana Ave.

Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said light smoke was seen coming from the structure. The fire had already been extinguished by an employee who used a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.

Dozens of employees and customers evacuated the store due to smoke. No injuries were reported.

Although Jenkins said they are investigating the cause, a manager told employees Friday morning that someone started a fire in the store again.

On the night of Jan. 22, a small fire occurred in the paper goods section. Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 9:14 p.m. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at $2,000. The Fire Department determined the fire was intentionally set.

Kapolei house fire is traced to mattress

A Kapolei man escaped injury Friday when fire broke out at his home at 540 Manawai St.

The man was at home when he smelled smoke, and managed to exit without injury. A sprinkler system prevented the fire from spreading before firefighters arrived.

The incident was first reported at 1:49 p.m. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 1:59 p.m.

Investigators traced the origin of the fire to an outdoor mattress. The cause is under investigation.

Blaze prompts evacuation of Waikiki tower

A two-alarm fire occurred at Scandia Towers at 155 Paoakalani Ave. in Waikiki just before 12:20 a.m. Friday. Nine units and 35 firefighters responded and observed smoke and flames emerging from the fourth floor of the 11-story residential building.

Fire Capt. David Jenkins said a man was in the unit at the time. He was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm and escaped uninjured. Other residents evacuated after the building’s alarm system was activated.

Firefighters brought the fire under control and extinguished it by 12:34 a.m. The cause is under investigation.
