Hawaii remained at No. 4 for a fifth consecutive week in the AVCA Division I-II Coaches Top 15 men’s volleyball poll.
The major change in Monday’s rankings came at No. 1, where Long Beach State replaced defending national champion Ohio State. The 49ers (19-2, 13-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) received 13 first-place votes to move up one spot.
The Buckeyes (19-1, 8-0 MIVA), who had been a unanimous No. 1 since the first regular-season poll on Jan. 9, received the remaining 11 votes and dropped to No. 2. Ohio State suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday, losing in straight sets to UC Irvine.
Brigham Young (17-2, 11-1 MPSF) stayed at No. 3. The Cougars will host the Rainbow Warriors (20-2, 10-2) on Friday and Saturday. The matches are critical to both teams’ hopes of hosting an MPSF quarterfinal as a top-four seed.
Hawaii hasn’t won in Provo, Utah, since Feb. 21, 2003, losing the past 13 in Smith Fieldhouse. The Warriors have won their past 15 matches, including 10 straight in MPSF play.
SandBows stay ranked at No. 5
Off to the program’s best start, undefeated Hawaii stayed put in Monday’s AVCA Collegiate Beach Top 15.
The Rainbow Wahine (8-0) are coming off a 4-0 performance at last week’s Queen’s Cup, where they defeated then-No. 9 Stetson and unranked Loyola Marymount twice. The SandBows next host the Outrigger Hawaii Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Queen’s Beach, with a field that includes No. 1 USC (4-0), the defending national champion; No. 4 Florida State (4-2), which was ranked No. 2 last week; No. 7 Arizona (4-2); Nebraska (1-0) and Utah (1-4).
Morales earns Big West softball honor

Morales hit .524, scored three runs, drove in six and posted a 1.048 slugging percentage during UH’s 6-1 run last week. Morales has hit safely in eight straight games entering this week’s Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic. UH (15-9) has won seven of its past eight games and closes the nonconference schedule with seven games in the five-day tournament, starting with today’s 6 p.m. matchup with Connecticut. UH also will face Harvard, Purdue and Marist in the tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
