Last weekend was a rough one for some of the top collegiate women’s basketball college players from Hawaii.
The seasons, and careers, of William & Mary forward Alex Masaquel (‘Iolani ‘13) and Alaska Anchorage point guard Kiki Robertson (Mid-Pacific ’13) came to tough and surprising ends.
Masaquel helped the Tribe to a program-best record of 20-11, but William & Mary was not selected to any postseason tournament after losing to No. 1 seed Elon University in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.
Robertson started for the No. 1-seeded Seawolves, who were shocked in the NCAA Division II West Regional semifinals on Saturday by Simon Fraser.
Also, Whitman (Wash.) University’s duo of point guard Casey Poe (Kamehameha-Hawaii ’14) and forward Maegan Martin (Maryknoll ’15) had its season come to an end in the elite eight of the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday.
Below is a look at each of the four players.
Alex Masaquel
William & Mary, 5-10, senior, forward
Masaquel finished with 11 points, a team-high five rebounds, an assist and a block in 33 minutes, but the Tribe were ousted by Elon 88-60 on Friday. Masaquel finished the season second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.7 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds in 31.2 minutes while shooting 47.9 percent (162-for-338) from the field. She also had a team-high 57 steals for the Tribe.
Masaquel was twice named to the All-CAA second team and last week was also named to the All-CAA defensive team and All-CAA academic team. She is one of 18 players in school history to record 1,000 career points.
Kiki Robertson
Alaska Anchorage, 5-7, senior, point guard
Robertson played 26 minutes and tallied six points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals in an 80-70 loss to Simon Fraser on Saturday. The No. 2-ranked team in NCAA Division II entering the tournament, the Seawolves finished the season 30-2 with their first loss in their last 27 games. Robertson, who averaged 8.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 3.4 steals per game this season, ended her career No. 18 on the all-time NCAA Division II list with 700 career assists. Her 382 steals came up nine short of the top 25 in Division II history. She also set single-season school records this season with 109 steals and an 87.4 free-throw percentage.
Tuesday, Robertson was named to the D2CCA All-West Region second team after earning her second career Great Northwest Athletic Conference defensive player of the year award last week. She was one of two players to rank in the top 25 in the nation in steals, assists and assist-to-turnover ratio and wound up winning a school-record 118 games in her four-year career.
Casey Poe
Whitman, 5-8, junior, point guard
Poe finished with six points, four rebounds, a game-high four assists and four steals and a block before fouling out of a 65-48 loss to St. Thomas on Saturday. Poe finished the season second on the team averaging 11.0 points per game while leading the Blues with 123 assists. She also averaged 5.5 rebounds per game and shot 40.3 percent (116-for-288) from the field while averaging 29.1 minutes.
Poe has started 54 of the team’s 56 games over the past two seasons and was an All-Northwest Conference first team selection this season after making the second team last year.
Maegan Martin
Whitman, 5-9, sophomore, forward
Martin chipped in six points and two rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench against St. Thomas. Martin was eighth on the team averaging 13.3 minutes per game but still managed to finish fourth on the squad averaging 8.2 points to go along with 3.4 rebounds.
She was a reserve for all 31 games this season, but the team graduates two starters. Her 52.7 field-goal percentage was way ahead of any other player on the team to average double-digit minutes.
