State officers have blocked off a section of shoreline on South Maui after someone found an aging piece of unexploded ordnance among rocks near the ocean.
Maui police received a call about the “old, rusted” explosive at 11:27 a.m. Saturday and notified the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, said Deborah Ward, DLNR spokeswoman.
Both agencies responded to the location near 4950 Makena Road and state officers taped off a perimeter.
Ward said an exploded ordnance disposal unit was called to remove the item. She said it was not clear when the team would arrive.
Man arrested in alleged kidnapping, abuse
A 57-year-old McCully man was arrested Friday night after he restrained and abused a 56-year-old woman, police said.
Police were called and the man was arrested at his Nanea Street home at about 11:40 p.m. for investigation of kidnapping and abuse of a household member.
The incident happened about 9 p.m. He was also arrested on a warrant.
Driver flees after intentionally hitting car
A 21-year-old man was at large Saturday after intentionally driving into another vehicle in Waimanalo, police said.
The man illegally entered a 25-year-old woman’s vehicle at about 10 p.m. Friday then followed her in another vehicle when she drove off, police said.
He intentionally struck the woman’s vehicle, injuring her and damaging both vehicles, police said.
The man fled and was still at large Saturday morning.
Police opened an investigation for first-degree criminal property damage and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
Suspect charged in robbery of restaurant
A 52-year-old man was charged Friday with robbing a Japanese restaurant in McCully at gunpoint.
Malcolm Hirakawa, of McCully, was charged with first-degree robbery and two firearm offenses. His bail was set at $100,000.
Police said Hirakawa entered Gyotaku, 1824 S. King St., at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday and threatened the employees with a firearm.
Hirakawa took the cash register from the shelf and fled, police said.
He was arrested at 2:51 p.m. Thursday at the Queen’s Medical Center.
