Like other Hawaii counties have done, the Honolulu Police Department aims to strap body cameras to patrol officers in at least one district by the end of the year. To his credit, acting Chief Cary Okimoto wants to focus the first batch in an area (unspecified at this time) that sees a high rate of complaints against officers. The price tag for video conduct check? HPD estimates that 500 cameras could generate about 4,000 terabytes a year (one terabyte equals 1,000 gigabytes). Uber cruises into Kauai, Hawaii island
It remains to be seen if Uber’s entry into the transportation scene on Hawaii island and Kauai will become as contentious with the taxi industry as it has been on Oahu.
The ride-hailing smartphone app made its debut in the Garden Island more than a week ago and just launched Friday on the Big Island. Uber said company safeguards, such as driver background checks and insurance, will come into play for public safety. Some taxi leaders, though, are already calling for regulation.
