AZUSA, Calif. >> Each season, University of Hawaii offensive linemen are taught the “Slater,” a blocking tactic named after Hall of Fame tackle Jackie Slater.
On Monday, several former Rainbow Warriors were introduced to Slater, who is the offensive line coach at Azusa Pacific, where UH’s pro day was held.
“It was amazing to meet the man my sets were named after,” said offensive tackle RJ Hollis, who demonstrated the “Slater” to Slater. “He liked my technique and commented on it.”
Offensive lineman Leo Koloamatangi played on a team that went against one coached by Slater in the NFLPA all-star game. “I went to their practice early just to take notes from him,” Koloamatangi said. “He’s the guy who’s made a difference in our game.”
Warriors reunion
Kolomatangi said he enjoyed this reunion with former teammates, many of whom he had not seen since the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve. He said he realized this might be the last time they will be together.
“That’s why you sit here and cherish these moments,” Koloamatangi said. “You shake hands with all the players and coaches you can. You do what you can. … All these guys here, I spent years with. This is our one day, literally, four hours to show these scouts who know nothing about us what we’re about. All they know is what they see on film. … We’ve been together this entire journey. I hope everybody here knows I’ve been right here with them hoping they do great. That’s what real brothers, family, do. They’re there for each other.”
Pressed for technique
Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea bench-pressed 225 pounds 22 times, but was credited with 17 reps because officials insisted he did not lock his arms on five lifts. He believed he used the correct technique, but added, “it is what it is.”
Kema-Kaleiwahea showed burst (1.65 seconds over the first 10 yards) and performed well in field drills. But he also gets a do-over. Kema-Kaleiwahea, who played at Arizona before transferring to UH two years ago, has been invited to participate in the Wildcats’ pro day on Friday.
Harris’ Big Easy showing
Running back Paul Harris participated in a regional combine earlier in New Orleans, where he ran 40 yards in 4.55 seconds with a vertical jump of 341⁄2 inches. He has split his training between California and Ohio.
Drawing interest
Cornerback Jalen Rogers, who has drawn interest from the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, is expected to compete at the Arizona regional combine.
Rogers and cornerback Jamal Mayo have been training in Houston.
Impressive display
Slot receiver Samson Anguay played in five games in 2016 and Kalei Letoto played in none, but they were impressive during pro day.
Anguay, who is 5 feet 7 and 173 pounds, bench-pressed 225 pounds 20 times. He also had a broad jump of 10 feet, 2 inches.
Letoto, who is 5-9 and 178 pounds, had a vertical jump of 38 inches, best of the day. He also benched 225 pounds 16 times.
