Police warn public of utility scam
Hawaii County police are warning the public about a telephone utility scam where a caller poses as a representative of Hawaii Electric Light Co.
A business in Naalehu reported to police Tuesday that they received a call from someone who posed as a HELCO representative and claimed their electric bill was overdue.
The caller said their electricity would be turned off unless they paid the bill immediately.
Police are advising the public not to respond to any payment requests via telephone or the internet.
If residents or businesses receive a call from HELCO that may be legitimate, the company recommends to first call HELCO at the number listed in the phone directory to confirm.
