The Honolulu Police Department’s bomb squad responded after a suspicious object was found at Hanauma Bay on Saturday morning. The state park was evacuated and then reopened to the public in the early afternoon. A bomb squad pick-up truck, bottom, left the park.

City officials closed a busy Hanauma Bay for about three hours Saturday to investigate what turned out to be a military flare.

Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Michael Jones said firefighters responded to report of a suspicious object at about 10:40 a.m.

He said a lifeguard conducting training found the object in the water and brought it to shore, prompting an evacuation of the beach as a precaution.

The police department’s bomb squad removed the item, and the park was reopened at about 1:45 p.m.

Jones said the device was an expended flare.
