University of Hawaii sophomore Metin Aydin finished 18th in the 200-yard backstroke in school-record time at the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships on Saturday at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Aydin fell just short of qualifying for the finals in his second event this week, but his time of 1 minute, 41.02 seconds edged his previous UH-best 1:41.03. The school record entering the season was 1:44.42 set by Thomas Winkler in 2006.
Aydin set UH records in all three events he entered in the NCAA meet. He reached the 200 individual medley final on Thursday and placed 19th in the 100 backstroke on Friday.
UH sophomore Johan Sandell closed the season by placing 33rd in platform diving with a score of 272.10. The Rainbow Warriors finished 39th in the team standings.
UH wins 4 events at Rainbow Relays
University of Hawaii track and field athletes claimed four events at the Rainbow Relays held Friday and Saturday at UH’s Ching Complex.
UH sophomore Tristan Setzer set a personal best in winning the women’s 800-meter run on Friday with a time of 2 minutes, 14.47 seconds. Senior Montana Martinez won the 1,500-meter run at 4:41.10 and sophomore Karen Bulger won the javelin with a throw of 149 feet, 4.9 inches, the top mark in the Big West this season.
Freshman Lily Lowe cleared 5 feet, 9 inches (1.75 meters) in a jump-off with Sacramento State’s Elizabeth Venzon to win the high jump on Saturday.
Sacramento State finished first in the tri-meet with 172 points, followed by UH with 123 points and Cal State Northridge with 78.
HPU and Holy Names split in baseball
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team split a doubleheader with Holy Names on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park, winning the first game 13-3, and dropping the second game 5-2.
In the opener, the Sharks (13-15, 3-13 PacWest) exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to take control of the game.
In the second game, Holy Names (5-22, 2-12) was able to break a 2-all tie in the fifth inning, then shut down the Sharks the rest of the way to earn the split.
Cal Baptist sweeps BYUH in softball
The BYU-Hawaii softball team dropped both games in a doubleheader with California Baptist, falling 6-0 and 14-1 at BYUH Field.
In the first game, the Lancers (24-7, 18-2 PacWest) scored a pair of runs in the first inning, grabbing a lead that would never be threatened, as Cal Baptist pitcher Ashley Coleman allowed just two hits in a complete-game performance.
In the second game, the Lancers again scored in the opening frame, but the Seasiders (10-22, 7-13) knotted it up in the bottom of the inning. However, the Lancers regained the lead with two runs in the second, then piled on 10 runs in the third inning to turn the game into a rout.
