Kamehameha put on a solid small-ball and long-ball display Saturday against Punahou.
Dallas Millwood executed a successful squeeze bunt and homered, Kyler Stephens batted 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs and Alana Cobb-Adams went 3-for-3 with a triple and four runs scored in the Warriors’ 11-2 victory over the host Buffanblu in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu softball game.
“The bats have been hot and give them all the credit, the hard work they’ve been putting in,” said Kamehameha coach James Millwood, who also is the father of Dallas. “What’s been the difference is being able to play small ball and score runs when we have runners in scoring position.”
Rayla Jacobs-Kea pitched a five-hitter with four strikeouts for the No. 3 Warriors (7-1-1). She struggled with her control, walking five batters and hitting two.
“She’s just been so valuable to us,” James Millwood said. “Just a real gutty performance. She kept the batters off-balance and it really helped us because our defense has been real solid.”
Kamehameha executed the squeeze, had two bunt hits, drew nine walks, stole five bases and benefited from five wild pitches.
“They hit the ball, they ran on us and did the things good teams do,” Punahou coach Bob Makahilahila said. “Hat’s off to them, that’s why they’re Kamehameha.”
Stephens’ solo homer to left in the third inning made it 4-0. The junior singled in the first, sixth and seventh and was hit by a pitch in the fourth.
“I was looking for it inside and that’s exactly what she gave me,” said Stephens of the homer.
Dallas Millwood squeezed in Tausani Tavale in the fourth, then belted a two-run shot to center in the sixth, which made it 8-2.
“It’s kind of fun because people don’t expect a power hitter to be able to bunt,” said Dallas Millwood, a junior.
The Buffanblu (4-4), ranked No. 6, scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, but also left the bases loaded in those innings. They also wasted a lead-off double in the sixth.
“Offensively so far this year we’ve been pretty good, but we needed a key hit today and that’s what we didn’t get,” Makahilahila said.
Jacobs-Kea, a senior, scraped her left elbow and had a tear in her pants after sliding into third base in the fifth. She put a bandage on the elbow and continued to pitch effectively.
“It helped a lot, knowing my defense had my back. I just had to put it in play for them,” Jacobs-Kea said.
Punahou is 1-3 in league play since finishing fourth out of 20 teams at the Desert Mountain Tournament in Horizon Park, Ariz.
“We just got back from the mainland and it’s just a different team,” said Makahilahila, who coached previously at Kamehameha. “I don’t know if it’s because they all know each other and stuff, but up there we were playing against teams we didn’t know and we played like Kamehameha did today. We come home and I don’t know what it is. I don’t know if it’s the Kamehameha mystique.”
