A 21-year-old man charged with attempted murder in a shooting last month outside a Kakaako bar pointed a gun squarely at the victim’s chest before pulling the trigger, Deputy Prosecutor David Van Acker told a state judge Thursday.
His remark came after an Oahu grand jury returned an indictment charging Keith Rambin with attempted murder, using a firearm to commit the crime, robbery and carrying a firearm without a permit. The indictment also charges Denzel Davis, 22, with robbery, using a firearm to commit the robbery, possessing a firearm while under indictment for other crimes and carrying a firearm without a permit.
Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi confirmed bail at
$1 million for each defendant.
Van Acker told Garibaldi that Davis approached and pointed a gun at a 46-year-old man inside New Club Sun on Cummins Street on March 28 and demanded money. He said Rambin then entered the bar and punched the man in the face before he and Davis left the bar.
After Rambin and Davis left, Van Acker said, the man went outside the bar to lock the door. He said there was a fracas and that Rambin shot the man in the chest before fleeing with Davis.
The manager of an adjacent business told police he saw the man walking in an adjoining hallway; the man then stumbled to the doorway and asked him to call for an ambulance.
The city’s Emergency Medical Services Department said an ambulance transported the man to a trauma hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest.
Rambin and Davis turned themselves in to police April 1. Davis lists a Wahiawa address as his residence. Rambin did not provide a local address.
At the time of the shooting, Davis was free on $300,000 bail in a sexual assault case involving a 17-year-old girl. The alleged sexual assault happened
in 2011 when Davis was
16 years old.
The state Family Court waived its jurisdiction over Davis last year, allowing the state to charge him as an adult. Davis’ trial is scheduled for later this month.
