Kilauea found to expel debris from eons ago

    A fountain of lava erupted from Kilauea Iki crater on Dec. 5, 1959. Two rock samples from this eruption contain geochemical anomalies that could date back 4.5 billion years, shortly after Earth first formed. Rock samples from that era were also found during the December 1959 eruption.

Scientists studying Kilauea Volcano have found that it is coughing up material 4.5 billion years old — roughly the age of the planet, meaning volcanoes serve as master recyclers. Read more
