The University of Hawaii baseball team’s anticipated Big West opener against host Cal Poly was a wash.
Friday’s rainout will be played as part of a double-header today at Baggett Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. Hawaii time.
“In baseball, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains,” UH coach Mike Trapasso said. “It’ll be a long day, but that’s what happens when you play outside.”
Brendan Hornung, who was Friday’s scheduled starter for UH, will pitch in today’s opener. Trapasso said he will wait to see if the postponement affects Hornung’s next start. Because of the Easter weekend, the next three-game series against UC Riverside begins on Thursday.
“We’ll have to see (after today’s game) if Brendan needs an extra day (of rest),” Trapasso said.
Dominic DeMiero will pitch in today’s second game. Sunday’s starter is between Jackson Rees and Neil Uskali. Trapasso said if Hornung needs an extra day, then the pitcher who does not start on Sunday could be the starter on Thursday. In that scenario, starts for Hornung and DeMiero would be pushed back a day.
“We’re fortunate to be in a position where we have four quality starters and can do that,” Trapasso said. “Brendan is one of those guys who bounces back quickly. We’ll have to see how (today’s) game goes, and go from there.”
Trapasso said the ’Bows, who arrived in town on Wednesday night, worked out in the Cal Poly weight room on Friday. “It was more so to get out of our hotel rooms,” Trapasso said.
Trapasso said the ’Bows, who went 18-9 in pre-conference play, are ready to begin the Big West play. “There’s no amp,” Trapasso said. “This isn’t football. We just go out and we’re ready to go.”
