Hawaii’s credit unions have raised more than a half-million dollars in less than four years to help build the new Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.
As of January, the credit unions collectively had raised $536,444.54 to easily surpass the “5 In 5” goal.
“This is an astonishing fundraising feat,” Laurie Okawa Moore, Hawaii Credit Union League communications officer and “5 In 5” coordinator, said Wednesday in a statement. “To put it in perspective, it took the previous 15 years for Hawaii’s credit unions to raise $650,000 for Kapiolani Children’s Miracle. To raise over a half-million dollars in less than five years shows how committed Hawaii’s credit unions are to the children in our community.”
Unions and chapters raised money through bake sales, craft fairs and sports tournaments, among other activities.
To mark the milestone, the medical center’s new Diamond Head Tower rehabilitation reception area has been named “Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids.”

A flight is considered on time if it arrived within 15 minutes of the scheduled time, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
