Shoji retirement celebration set for May 21

The Dave Shoji Aloha Ball Retirement Celebration honoring the longtime Hawaii women’s volleyball coach is scheduled for May 21 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The event includes a VIP reception at the Ed Wong Hospitality Room with food stations, a sushi bar, a hosted bar and interaction with master chef Sam Choy. VIP tables are $5,000 for the reception that begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by the program at 6.

General admission is $42 and includes a $10 food voucher for concession stands that will feature special menu items.

Former KGMB and ESPN sportscaster Larry Beil, who now works at KGO-TV in San Francisco, will be the emcee. The night includes live musical entertainment, video tributes and highlights, as well as tributes from Shoji’s sons Kawika and Erik, members of the 2016 U.S. Olympic volleyball team.

Tickets go on sale Tuesday for H-Club members, Thursday for Wahine volleyball season-ticket holders and April 24 for the public. Tickets are available at eTicketHawaii.com or by calling the UH ticket office at 944-2697.

All proceeds will benefit the Rainbow Wahine volleyball program and the Dave & Mary Shoji Scholarship Endowment Fund.

Shoji retired in February after 42 years and four national titles. He finished his career with a record of 1,179-198-1.

Brenzil wins javelin at heptathlon meet

The University of Hawaii’s Alexis Brenzil won the javelin and finished second in the shot put at the California Invitational Heptathlon on Wednesday and Thursday in Azusa, Calif.

Brenzil, a freshman, threw the javelin 135 feet, 7 inches (41.33m) and the shot put 39-7 (12.06m). She finished in 34th place overall with 4,429 points. Rainbow Wahine freshman Calli-Ann Abbott was fourth in the shot put (38-10.25, 11.84m) and finished with 4,124 points despite not competing in the 800 meters.

At the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif., UH sophomore Briahn Brown finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 35-5.75 (10.81m). Freshman Alison Bowman finished fifth in the 1,500 meters in 5:29.39.

HPU baseball snaps 8-game losing streak

Tyler Van Stone pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Hawaii Pacific baseball team beat Fresno Pacific 7-2 on Thursday at Hans L’Orange Park.

Ryan Torres-Torioka batted 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the Sharks (15-24, 5-22 PacWest) snapped an eight-game losing streak.

The Sunbirds dropped to 13-17, 10-11.
