Nobody ever said the legislative process is logical. And if they did, the current upheaval over the vote to extend the Honolulu rail project tax would prove them wrong.
The state Senate’s own draft of the rail financing bill, the least generous version, passed that chamber unanimously.
But this week senators are facing a vote that actually means something rather than simply moving something along for discussion. Now some are willing to go to the mat against Sen. Jill Tokuda, the budget committee chief, who resists the tax extension.

Men’s volleyball team gets another set
For student athletes, it’s always a thrill to have a season’s hard work extended into the postseason. After all, neither the players nor fans want the play to end.
For the University of Hawaii volleyball men, it doesn’t have to — yet. The team has secured an at-large berth for the NCAA tournament, a play-in match on May 2 against Penn State; a win then would lead to a semifinal match May 4 against Ohio State. Then …
But one set at a time. Let’s hope this week of practice and prep will pay off big time.
