The University of Hawaii women’s golf team finished in third place at the first Big West Women’s Golf Championship on Tuesday at Oak Quarry Golf Club. The Rainbow Wahine finished six strokes behind champion Cal Poly.
UH’s Isabella Leung finished 1 over par and posted a 217, seven strokes behind individual champion Martina Edberg.
HPU’s Gunter named pitcher of the week
Hawaii Pacific southpaw Matthew Gunter was named PacWest Conference pitcher of the week for the second time this season, the league announced Monday.
Gunter threw a complete game in a 2-1 victory over No. 13 Dixie State. He gave up seven hits and four walks and struck out 10 batters in the upset. The senior leads the PacWest in strikeouts and recently broke HPU’s single-season record with 93 strikeouts, passing Rico Garcia’s 87 in 2015.
BYUH men take the lead in PacWest golf
The BYU-Hawaii men’s golf team finished 16 under par and holds the lead after two rounds of the PacWest men’s golf championship on Tuesday at Turtle Bay Resort’s Fazio Course. Chaminade trails in fifth, followed by Hawaii Hilo in eighth place and Hawaii Pacific in ninth place. BYUH’s Nicolas Herrera is tied for third at 8 under par.
On the women’s side, Cal Baptist holds a five-stroke lead in the eight-team field, while Hawaii Pacific trails in fourth place and Hawaii Hilo remains in seventh place. Play resumes at 7 a.m. today.
Zietz moves into Bali quarterfinals
Kauai’s Sebastian Zietz scored a 16.50 to clinch his fifth-round heat and advance to the quarterfinals of the Komune Bali Pro on Tuesday in Keramas, Bali, Indonesia. Zietz also scored 16.50 to win his fourth round heat.
Zietz will face Australia’s Nick Vasicek in today’s quarterfinal round, surf permitting.
