Another Japanese restaurant chain is slated to open in Waikiki next month.
Tsukiji Shokudo Genchan Waikiki expects to open at
339 Royal Hawaiian Ave. in May, according to a Facebook post from restaurant operator Tokyo-based Cypress Inc. The casual dining restaurant, which offers fresh seafood and is named for Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji Fish Market, would be Cypress’ first overseas location. The company has been advertising for full- and part-time cooks, dishwashers and servers since late February.
Cypress’ website markets its Tsukiji Shokudo Genchan Waikiki brand as “authentic Japanese cuisine” in a setting that resembles the “delicious, plentiful and casual shops outside of the Tsukiji area.” According to Cypress’ website, the company motto is to “create branches of deliciousness and trust.”
TripAdvisor reviewers mostly rank Tsukiji Shokudo Genchan’s various locations in Japan as 3 to 4.5 stars out of 5. The company’s other restaurant brands include Tsukiji Higaya, Yokatai and Tsukiji Sushi-Gen Honten.
A building permit is on file with the Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting to complete $350,000 worth of redevelopment work on the restaurant site, which is between the Lauula Street and Waikolu Way alleys that connect Royal Hawaiian Avenue with Seaside Avenue. The permit, which is in the inspection phase, includes building alterations, electrical work, fire alarm installation, plumbing and air-conditioning work.
