An Oahu grand jury on Wednesday indicted a 42-year-old man in connection with the death at a Waikiki hotel of a 29-year-old woman who had previously been charged with prostitution.
Jeremy J. Henderson of California was indicted on second-degree murder charges in the death of Ashley A. Brandeberry. His bail is set at $1 million, and an arraignment is scheduled for Monday in Circuit Court.
Brandeberry was found dead in a hotel room at the Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel shortly after 4:15 a.m. Friday, when police and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to a call for a defibrillator. When they arrived at the hotel room, police said, Henderson opened the door and led them to Brandeberry, who was motionless on the floor, according to a court document.
Henderson told police he had just met Brandeberry at a karaoke bar and that they returned to his room, where they had been kissing but didn’t go any further sexually. He said that Brandeberry told him she wanted to go to sleep. Henderson told police that when he woke up he noticed she wasn’t breathing.
However, according to a court document, Henderson also gave police a different account. He said he and Brandeberry started “getting it on” at his hotel room, and that “she said she likes to get choked and strangled while she gets it on.”
Brandeberry was pronounced dead at 5:03 a.m.
Bruises and “ligature type marks” were discovered on her neck. Deputy Prosecutor Loren Haugen said Wednesday that Brandeberry died of asphyxia and that a belt was found inside the hotel room.
Police said a woman in a room next to Henderson’s said she heard banging and a man and woman arguing for about 20 minutes.
Brandeberry was scheduled to appear in District Court in Honolulu on May 16 on a prostitution charge.
