Friday Night Lights II will bring a full-inclusion home-and-home basketball program to special education students beginning Friday at the Roosevelt High School gym.
The 4:30 p.m. event will be followed May 3 with a similar program at Kalani High in a series coordinated by the University of Hawaii Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science, Adapted Physical Activity Program.
The program, complete with cheerleaders and fans, aims to provide, “The ability for the students to experience school spirit and pride by representing their school in an interscholastic sporting event,” said Allison Tsuchida, a UH KRS doctoral candidate.
BYUH women’s tennis on top
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis remained on top of the Division II National Rankings on Wednesday. Also for the Seasiders (27-0), Nannan Zhang maintained her No. 1 rank in singles after picking up a victory on Wednesday. Also ranked in the top eight for BYUH in singles are Summer Wen at No. 5 and Karen Lui at No. 8. In the doubles ranking, Zhang and Wen are No. 1.
Winners of 11-straight PacWest Championships, the Seasiders, move to the NCAA Championships, beginning on May 10.
Zietz takes third
Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz finished third in the Komune Bali Pro presented by The Mad Hueys on Wednesday in Keramas, Bali.
In four- to five-foot surf, Australia’s Brent Dorrington defeated India’s Rio Waida in the 35-minute final. In his quarterfinal heat, Zietz defeated Australia’s Nick Vasicek 9.63 to 6.67 and lost in the semifinal heat to the 16-year old Waida.
UH’s Albert earns BWC tennis award
Felix Albert was named the Big West Conference’s men’s tennis athlete of the week on Wednesday. Albert, UH’s No. 2 singles player, helped the Rainbow Warriors earn their first conference team win since 2014.
The Rainbow Warriors, seeded fifth, begin competition in the Big West Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California on Thursday against UC Irvine.
Sharks, Silverswords split in softball
Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific split a PacWest softball doubleheader on Wednesday at Howard Okita Field.
The Silverswords (7-35, 4-22) won the first game 4-2 while the Sharks (25-19, 14-14) won the second 7-5.
