A 15-year-old boy died Monday in a dirt bike crash in Honokaa, Hawaii island.
He is identified as Aukai Ahuna of Honokaa.
At about 3 p.m. Monday, police said, a Suzuki dirt bike motorcycle operated by Ahuna was traveling north on Pikake Street. As he approached the Ohia Street intersection, he lost control, was thrown from his motorcycle and struck a 2006 Ford truck.
He was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:51 p.m.
The truck driver, a 47-year-old Honokaa man, was uninjured.
Police said Ahuna was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Excessive speed was a factor, police said.
An autopsy will be conducted.
Police have initiated a negligent-homicide investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Casey Cabral at 961-8889 or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.
This is the 10th traffic-related fatality on the Big Island this year. The same number of fatalities occurred at this time last year.

3 injured when car hits guardrail and flips
Emergency Medical Services transported three people to a hospital after they were involved in a single-vehicle crash in Leeward Oahu early Tuesday.
The crash occurred at about 2:50 a.m. EMS reported a vehicle was traveling east at “a high rate of speed” on the H-1 freeway when it slammed into a guardrail before the Kunia offramp. The vehicle overturned and flipped onto a grassy embankment. Paramedics transported the occupants — an 18-year-old man, a man in his 20s and a 15-year-old girl — in serious condition to a hospital.
The crash caused traffic congestion on the freeway as police shut down the eastbound lanes to remove the vehicle from the embankment. Police said lanes were reopened just before 5:20 a.m.
