Makena’s Eric Dugas and Elliot Gouveia captured the 19th Big Island Candies Team Championship Tuesday. The season-opening Aloha Section PGA event was played at The Club at Hokulia.
Dugas and Gouveia shot 60 to take a four-stroke lead in Monday’s scramble format. They followed with a 69 in the best-ball format Tuesday to win by two over Juan Rodriguez and Kriss Kitt, who birdied the last three holes both days.
The winners split $3,000.
GOLF TIP: SAVING STROKES AROUND THE GREEN
>> Set-up: Shift 60 percent of your weight to the left side (righthanded golfers). If you draw an imaginary line from the center of your head to the ground, it should intersect the ground just in front of the ball. A good drill to check your position at set-up is to take your normal stance and drop a ball from your nose. The dropped ball should land just in front of the ball you are addressing.
>> Motion: Firm left wrist will produce consistent contact. The more wrist hinge you create, the more movement you will have to counteract before impact. Body and arms must be synched up through impact. Your arms cannot start the downswing and vice versa for the body. You should feel like you are hitting the shot with your torso versus your wrists.
