Going into its final road date of the season, the University of Hawaii softball team continues to hunt its first Big West win away from home.
Cal Poly shortstop Chelsea Convissar hit a go-ahead home run in the fourth inning and the Mustangs kept the Rainbow Wahine winless on the road in conference play with a 4-2 win on Friday in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
“We had a good lineup, but our pitching wasn’t up to theirs,” UH coach Bob Coolen said in a text.
The Rainbow Wahine (27-20, 6-10 Big West) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth when freshman Chardonnay Pantastico doubled to score Heather Cameron and freshman shortstop Laura Jaquez delivered a two-out RBI single.
But Convissar’s two-run shot with two out in the bottom of the inning pushed Cal Poly (32-16, 8-8) ahead for good.
The Mustangs opened the fifth with four singles to extend the lead and Cal Poly right-hander Sierra Hyland held off the Wahine to earn a complete-game victory.
Hyland (20-10), the Big West leader in earned-run average and strikeouts, allowed nine hits, struck out four and walked none. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in Cal Poly’s first run.
UH right-hander Brittany Hitchcock (18-10) struck out three, walked four and went the distance in the loss.
The Wahine were swept at Cal State Northridge and Cal State Fullerton this season and enter today’s doubleheader at Bob Janssen Field 0-7 in California this season.
